Jemma Arakelyan: Oncology Is Not Chosen for Work-Life Balance – It’s Chosen for Purpose

Jemma Arakelyan, chief executive officer at The Institute of Cancer and Crisis and medical advisor at the Immune Oncology Research Institute, praised an OncoDaily interview with Dr. Robert Peter Gale, calling him both a role model and a distant mentor whose “unpopular” opinions are eye-opening.

“In no time at all, Dr. Robert Peter Gale became both a role model and a distant mentor to me. His so-called ‘unpopular’ opinions, as he likes to call them, are truly eye-opening,” Arakelyan wrote, adding that the interview became one of her favorites and a reminder that many do not choose oncology for work–life balance.

She urged early-career clinicians and researchers to define their goals: “If you walk this path, it is because you are driven to help others, so it is crucial to figure out early what you want from your career. And if your dream is to be a top researcher or doctor, remember that you cannot keep up with people like David Baltimore and a team of twenty postdocs while also seeing patients.”

Arakelyan called the conversation valuable and said she expects it to resonate with others navigating the early, uncertain stages of their careers.

OncoDaily promoted the episode of OncoInfluencers featuring Dr. Gale, describing him as a world-renowned physician-scientist in hematology and immunology whose work shaped modern bone marrow transplantation and global radiation medicine.

The interview covers Gale’s motivations for pursuing medicine and leukemia research; his leadership of the international medical response to Chernobyl; treatment of radiation exposure and the evolution of crisis medicine; candid perspectives on work–life balance; challenges faced by women physicians and physician-parents; choosing a medical specialty based on talent and reality; and the role of cognitive bias in clinical decision-making.
