Journal launch enables oncology education and quality improvement

Radiation oncologist Shalin Shah, M.D., sought ways to improve clinician wellness by reducing inefficient processes in his clinic and applying proven process-improvement methods from other teams.

Working full time at MD Anderson in Sugar Land, Shah found it unlikely he would discover improvement projects from other locations by chance and could not locate a central repository. He asked the institution’s librarians about a collection of process-improvement work and learned they were developing a broader solution.

Shah joined the Research Medical Library and the Education and Alumni Relations teams to launch MD Anderson’s first academic journal, Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement (ACE-QI). He serves as deputy editor-in-chief and has observed projects from across MD Anderson and multidisciplinary teams nationwide.

“ACE-QI shows the possibilities we have at MD Anderson when we combine our expertise for something greater,” Shah said. “Between our invaluable librarians and expert editorial board, we created the first journal of its kind from a comprehensive cancer center.”
